Email Problems
If you’re having trouble sending or receiving email, here are some of the more common causes I’ve discovered for email problems: 1)You still have ten-nash; 2)You are using the wrong password; 3)Your email cache is reaching maximum capacity; 4)You have a message stuck in your Out Box; and 5)You are not Online. See below for an explanation for each of these common problems.
If you’re still using ten-nash email, you need to have your ten-nash email forwarded to your .org account and then delete your ten-nash email account from Entourage. I’ve found that as soon as that ten-nash email account is deleted, the email problems tend to disappear immediately. (See the last paragraph of this post for directions on how to forward your ten-nash email to your .org account.)
Are you sure you’re using your correct password? Your .org password will be your last four digits unless you changed it online. Try your last four digits and see if that works.
Have you let your email pile up in your Deleted Items or Sent Mail, or heaven forbid, in your In Box? Get rid of your excess email. At some point, your cache will reach its maximum capacity, and your email will crash. You get no warning when this is about to happen, so don’t let it happen to you. Keep your email light and lean. If you want to see how “big” your email is, go to your hard drive, open Documents, find the Microsoft User Data folder, click on it once to select it. Pull down the File Menu to “Get Info.” The next screen will tell you how many megabytes of space your email is occupying. You should be around 50 megabytes or so, maximum. If you’re in the gigabyte territory, act fast! Delete like crazy…
Next common problem: Something in your Out Box won’t go. This one message could keep all of your messages from getting out. If there is an “unsendable” message in your Out Box, nine times out of ten, it won’t go because the address was typed incorrectly. You can open the message by double-clicking on it and checking the address. If you don’t know the correct address, you may have to delete that message entirely.
Finally, check to see if you are online. Are you using a wireless connection? Has the airport been selected? Have you typed in the correct password for the airport? Is your Location Manager set to your current location? If you are not online, you cannot get on the Internet. Check to see if you can pull up cnn.com. That page refreshes daily. By checking that page, you will know that you are not getting a web page from your browser’s cache and that you are “live.”
Now here’s how to forward your email from your ten-nash account to your .org account: Go to the SCS home page, click on Teacher Resources. Then click on Change Your Ten-Nash Password. The next screen will give you a space to Forward Your Ten-Nash Email. Type your new address in that space and click on Save. In a few moments, you will see a red message at the top of the screen that tells you that your email will be forwarded.
Open Entourage. Pull the Tools Menu all the way to the bottom to Accounts. The next screen will show that you have two accounts if you have not deleted ten-nash. Click on your ten-nash account. (It will NOT say scsk12.org.) Then click on the garbage can icon to delete that account. All of your settings will stay the same and all of your email and contacts will be preserved.
If you have any questions about any of this, please let me know. Happy emailing!
